They said it couldn't be done, but Terrace Talk proved the doubters wrong - and Weeshie Fogarty got an exclusive, lengthy interview with former Irish Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey. In August of 2001 at the Dingle home of his great friend Senator Tom Fitzgerald, Mr. Haughey sat down with Weeshie and spoke extensively on his sporting life and times.

This once-in-a-lifetime interview given by Mr. Haughy is unique, and indeed, may yet prove to be the last time he ever spoke to the media.

Charles Haughey was born in 1925. A successful accountant and real estate investor, he entered parliament as a Fianna Fail member in 1957. After holding a succession of ministerial positions in the 1960s, he was dismissed as Minister Of Finance in the 1970s for alleged gunrunning to the Irish Republican Army. However, he regained his party's favour and headed the Ministry Of Health And Social Welfare from 1977 to '79.

Haughey was Taoiseach during the years 1979-81, 1982 and 1987-'92. In 1992, his political career came to an end when various scandals forced his resignation. He continued to be dogged by accusations of financial improprieties through the 1990s. Weeshie says, "When I interviewed Charles Haughey, I found him gracious and courteous, and he made me feel at ease. Of course, I did not ask any political question of Mr. Haughey, lest it might terminate this superb interview!"

Charlie Haughy - Surely now a legendary Irish figure.
