Poignant letter from Jack Murphy in 1926 (Part 1)
Apr 22, 2012
Jack Murphy from Caherciveen was a Kerry footballer and played in the 1924 and 1926 All Ireland Finals. The 1926 Final against Kildare ended up in a draw with Jack playing at full back. He wrote this letter to his sister Nell in America describing the drawn match and how he was planning on going to Tralee for training before the replay.
He contracted pneumonia shortly after that training, most likely from putting his clothes on over his training gear. He never got the chance to play in the replay and died 11 days after the replay which Kerry won. The South Kerry Championship trophy was named in honour of Jack Murphy.

"It put the heart across me when the leather grazed our goal,
And my throat with shouting tattered like a scraw
There was never sweeter music than that final whistle blown,
And the board said, let me whisper, 'twas a draw"
